"SAP" stands for Systems, Applications, and Products in Data Processing. In 1972, five former IBM employees founded SAP. Their vision was to develop standard application software for real-time processing and to provide customers with the ability to interact with a common corporate database for a comprehensive range of applications. SAP has recently recast its product offerings under a comprehensive Web interface, called mySAP.com, and added new e-business applications, including customer relationship management (CRM) and supply chain management (SCM).
As of January 2007, SAP, a publicly traded company, had over 38,4000 employees in over 50 countries, and more than 36,200 customers around the world. SAP is turning its attention to small- and-medium sized businesses (SMB).
What is SAP Basis?
Basis is a business application software integrated solution. Simply, Basis is the administration of the SAP system.
A set of middleware programs and tools that provide the underlying base that enable applications to be interoperable across operating systems. SAP Basis includes a RDBMS, GUI, and client server architecture. Beyond the interface aspect of Basis, it also includes such components as a data dictionary as well as user and system administration.
It's a piece of middleware which links the application with the database and the operating system. Basis is most commonly associated with the GUI interface to the SAP, and the Basis administrator is an SAP, professional who is responsible for configuring the SAP environment, including the GUI screens and SAP application servers.
Basis Administrator administers the SAP application using the tools or transactions available under Basis component. Normal functions like creating user, assigning access rights, backup, restore, check the performance are some of the transaction available under Basis component in SAP.
